Project Overview
Our latest project involved converting a small downstairs cloakroom into a complete shower room in a UK home. As professional installers, we efficiently stripped the space back to basics, removing the old fixtures and floor tiles. The project scope included modifying the main water stopcock location and creating a solution for concealing the shower waste pipe within the floor structure – all standard procedures in our line of work.
Plumbing Installation
A key aspect of this conversion was the comprehensive plumbing system design. We expertly rerouted and concealed all pipework within the walls, creating a clean and streamlined appearance. The installation included incorporating new water supply lines for the shower and reconfiguring the waste pipes, with the shower drain pipe precisely embedded within the floor structure.
This “first fix” plumbing work, while invisible in the final result, significantly enhances both the aesthetics and functionality of the bathroom. By concealing the pipework, we’ve delivered a modern look that’s also easier to clean and maintain.
Tiling and Surface Work
The room underwent a complete transformation with stunning grey marble-effect porcelain tiles installed on both the floor and walls. The large format tiles with subtle veining create an elegant, spa-like atmosphere and visually expand the compact space. We carried the tiling from floor to ceiling for a luxurious, seamless look that maximizes the feeling of space.
The ceiling received a fresh coat of paint, brightening up the entire room and completing the clean, contemporary aesthetic.
New Fixtures and Fittings
After the preparatory work was complete, we installed:
- A modern close-coupled toilet with a sleek, space-saving design
- A contemporary wall-hung vanity unit with a white basin and black matte tap
- A stylish black vertical radiator/towel rail for both warmth and towel storage
- A frameless glass shower enclosure with sleek hardware
- A premium black rainfall shower system with additional handheld unit
- Built-in niche shelving in the shower area for toiletries
The Final Result
The completed shower room showcases a perfect blend of functionality and style, particularly impressive given the limited space we had to work with. The marble-effect tiling creates a luxurious feel throughout, while the glass shower enclosure keeps the space feeling open and bright. The combination of white fixtures with striking black hardware provides contemporary contrast.
Despite the room’s compact dimensions, clever space planning has ensured it feels surprisingly spacious and includes all necessary amenities. The frosted window allows natural light to flood in while maintaining privacy, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere.
This conversion proves that even the smallest of spaces can be transformed into stylish, functional shower rooms with the right planning and execution. What was once a simple downstairs WC is now a fully-featured bathroom that adds significant value to the home, both in terms of everyday convenience and property worth.
